DIY Oatmeal Play Dough

I know I said before that I had a favorite homemade play dough, but we had so much fun with this recipe, that I’m adding it to the list! I think I have opened my eyes and moved on to trying new recipes…so here we go!

I just think maybe next time, I might add some cinnamon or nutmeg. Perhaps an essential oil if I’m up to it. But in all, this was a great way to have fun and use our imaginations!

There are lots and lots of different recipes to make play dough. To be honest, I really want to try a microwavable recipe. I feel like by the time the kids are in Elementary school, I will have conquer many (and all, fingers crossed) play dough recipes. Wow! Don’t let that title to get to my head – Play Dough Conqueror? (Really? What is that?!)

I think this recipe is really neat because it uses normal every day kitchen ingredients. I’m not a baker but you can always find a bag of flour in my pantry. More for the kids to play than food, but hey, potato, potAto!

I love the way Miss 2’s face lights up when she’s given a new textured play dough.

Oh darn. Guess you thought you would see a happy girl photo … nope, she looked down. I always miss those first initial shots, but believe me, it was there!

I only gave her a few materials to work with and she turned her oatmeal play dough experience into a bakers delight. She said she was making pie and then walked it over to her play kitchen.

I’m sorry, you haven’t had frog pie before? You are really missing out….

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup water

Mix to desired consistency.

This is a good guideline for the recipe. I’m not sure why but today our dough was really wet so I ended up adding about 1/4 cup more flour. If it’s too dry, add more water. It’s a pretty forgiven recipe that you can’t mess up.

I love this photo because you can see the flexibility of the play dough. Miss 2 was stretching and rounding out her dough to make the perfect pie crust.

How else can we make play dough? I think a new play dough recipe needs to be discovered each week, don’t you?
