DIY Puffy Paint

We love to find new ways to make paint. Miss 2 is very artistic and would happy painting all day. Mr 4 is not very artistic, however; he loves to feel squishy, slimy materials between his fingers. This project was great for satisfying both of their loves.

I can actually recall this craft back from even my childhood days. I remember being in kindergarten, around a large table and everyone having their own bowl of puffy paint. This activity sticks out in my mind. Was it because I was so curious of the goop? Or perhaps it was my artwork? Either way, I knew I wanted to make this easy and fun project for my children too.

Supplies:

  • Glue
  • Shaving Cream
  • Food Coloring

You can use anything to paint on. We used large brown packaging paper and cut it down to size. I wanted a larger canvas for them to work on, knowing ahead of time, that things could get messy. 😉

Directions:

Mix equal amounts of glue with shaving cream in a bowl or cup. Mix, mix, mix, until you pull out your spoon (craft stick whatever you use) and it sticks stiff to the spoon. Add food coloring and mix again. You don’t have to be spot on with the “equal parts”, just eye ball it.

I knew Miss 2 would be anxious to paint. I could tell she was studying the paint on the brush and really focused in her work.

I was also pleasantly surprised to see Mr 4 really focused as well…

But I knew it wouldn’t take long, for the whole sensory experience to begin!

And of course, when monkey sees, monkey do!

Next time we paint, I’m going to make lots of color options and roll out a very big canvas with packaging paper. I’m quite curious to see what will happen. Any thoughts?

There are lots of ways to make DIY puffy paint, how do you make yours?
